3.5 The Converter Window: The Main Tab

The principle function of the Main tab in the Converter window is to provide you with details regarding the file currently being converted. As soon as the Convert Selected to AVI, QT or RM command is given (using the right-click pop-up menu for a selected clip or clips), the first selected media file is immediately loaded into the appropriate converter and the process begins.

The Progress bar will tell you the current status of the file being converted. You can stop the conversion at any moment by pressing the Stop button. Note that, pressing Stop, a media file is created containing all the material converted up to that point. To stop a batch conversion, make sure you clear the task list using the Task List tab. For more about the task list, see 3.6 The Converter Window: The Task List Tab.

The Main menu also provides information on certain characteristics of the media file being converted. For example, the From field shows the name of the original file (and its folder directory) being used for the conversion. The To field indicates the name of the file which is being generated by the conversion and its directory location. The Estimated time field indicates how much time Incite Media Assistant estimates for the complete conversion of the media file. Elapsed time shows how much time has passed since the beginning of conversion. Remaining time indicates how much time remains before the conversion will be completed. All of this information is updated in real-time to keep you informed as to the progress of the conversion.

Similar information is provided for the disk space attributes of the media file being created. Estimated disk space shows the amount of disk space the converted media file will require. Using this information you might wish to abort the conversion and create new settings if the disk space required is too high for your system. Used disk space indicates how much disk space is currently being used by the drive which will store the converted media file, while the Free disk space field tells you the amount of space you have available on the destination drive.

If there are related audio files (external Wav files), Audio will tell you the number of files it detects. Remember that related audio files must have the suffix A1, A2, A3 or A4 as part of their file name and the Include Sound from Wav Files option (in the Audio Tab) must be active if the files are to be included in the conversion. See Using the Audio Tab: Audio Format and Audio Parameters for more. As RM does not support external wave files, this information is not provided in the Main tab of the RM converter. To include external wave files in an RM file, you must first convert to AVI. See 3.10 Real Media (RM) Converter for more.
