In chapters 2 and 3 we looked at the media management and conversion tools Incite Media Assistant provides. Now it is time to consider Incite Media Assistant in its role as a media logger or "rough cut" editor. Before we begin discussing the actual tools and methods, we should probably start with a description of what this role is and how it can be used.
Essentially, Incite Media Assistant lets you browse your system or network to access digitized media files and then displays this media as proxy AVI files in the Catalog List. Using the Preview/Logger area, you can review this material and select your log in and log out points. Once done, you can insert the edited material as a clip or "storyclip" into your storyboard. After Insertion, you may want to update a specific storyclip, to do this you will send a storyclip to the Monitor window, log new points and update the clip.
Once a storyboard has been created, you can save the sequence as an IML file (Incite Media List) which can be directly imported into an Incite editing station as a single line of video (plus its corresponding audio tracks, maximum 4 tracks). If you are not working with an Incite editing station, or else simply wish to print your storyboard sequence as a list of In and Out points, Incite Media Assistant will let you export special text files as well. In yet another situation you may wish to export storyboard sequences as movies for diverse applications choosing from any of the codecs you currently have installed on your system.
The following section, section 4.2, will discuss the use of the Preview/Logger monitor, perhaps the primary logging tool you will use to create your initial sequence. Section 4.3 will show you how you can edit and update individual storyclips from the sequence using the Monitor Window. The final section will explain how the storyboard sequence can then be exported as an IML, TXT file or Movie.
